Justice Department seeks more funds for Madlanga Commission

JOHANNESBURG - The Justice Department says it lacks funds to cover the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry’s six-month extension into police corruption.

Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development Mmamoloko Kubayi says her department has already approached Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana for more funding.

She says the department has spent R123 million of its R147 million budget.

This raises concerns about whether the inquiry can continue without affecting other critical areas of the department’s work.

Kubayi announced during a parliamentary briefing.

She's also flagged rising costs for other inquiries, including the Nkabinde Enquiry.

Officials say the Madlanga and Khampepe Commissions remain within budget for now.
