KZN nurses probed for insurance fraud

OZWATHINI - A KwaZulu-Natal family is accusing nurses of complicity in the death of their son.

They laid a criminal complaint of fraud against them after discovering they had taken out an insurance policy on his life.

Three nurses from Appelsbosch Hospital are now under investigation for fraud.

Nduduzo Mbatha’s parents found out about the policy a year after his death.

A specialist forensic investigator from one of the insurers confirmed the claims.

One nurse received two payouts of R54,000 and R58,000, a second received R54,000 and a third nurse's claim of R50,000 was flagged and halted.

The Department of Health and nursing unions have both condemned the incident.

DENOSA says it will begin an awareness campaign among health professionals against illegal and unethical practices.

Although the Mbatha family have lost their son, they are hoping the legal process will provide them with answers and the necessary closure.
