KZN police threaten legal action against businessman for Mkhwanazi comments

DURBAN – Police in KwaZulu-Natal say they will launch legal action against businessman Calvin Mathibeli for “malicious” and “baseless” accusations he made against Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi on social media.

In a post on Facebook that has been widely shared, Mathibeli, the owner of Calvin and Family Security Services, launched an attack on Mkhwanazi and the KZN police, claiming they were captured by his competitors.

He further alluded that Mkhwanazi had issued an instruction that he should be shot and killed.

In the post, Mathibeli said he was aware of plans being orchestrated by police to have him killed. This comes after police recently conducted an operation at his business premises in Durban.

“The modus operandi always used to satisfy handlers, the attempts to intimidate me and damage to my name ahead of my appearance before the Madlanga Commission,” Mathibeli wrote.

He claimed Mkhwanazi was an “ice boy” to taxi and security company owners.

“I don’t survive through protection fees from criminals, government officials and politicians you threaten to arrest if they don’t dance for your music because you have their ace cards,” the businessman added.

The post has been slammed by the KZN police, who have labelled it reckless and unfounded.

In a fiery statement, police said Mathibeli had an obsession with police in the province and particularly, Mkhwanazi.

"Police in KwaZulu-Natal will now seek legal recourse against Mr Mathibeli for his image-tinting utterances. Police will give him the attention he is seeking and get the ball of investigations rolling.”
