DURBAN - A KwaZulu-Natal Road Traffic Inspector has died after a state-owned vehicle he was travelling in caught fire while he was on duty along the N2 freeway in Park Rynie on the South Coast.
The incident happened at around 8pm on Tuesday, when the vehicle was engulfed in flames.
The officer was unable to escape and was declared dead at the scene.
The circumstances surrounding the fire remain unclear.

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport has launched an investigation, with a specialised team dispatched to establish what caused the vehicle to catch fire.
Transport MEC Siboniso Duma expressed his condolences to the officer’s family, friends and colleagues.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and colleagues of the officer during this difficult time,” the department said.
