KZN wildfires | Death toll rises to six with hundreds displaced
JOHANNESBURG - At least six firefighters have been killed battling blazes in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.
They were fighting a runaway blaze on a farm near Mpophomeni in Pietermaritzburg.
The first three firefighters suffered burn wounds and died on the scene.
Another four were transported to hospital with serious injuries.
Three of them died later in hospital.
Emergency services say the fire encircled the firefighters with flames as high as 2 metres.
The runaway fire has since been brought under control, but hundreds of people have been displaced.
