UP launches R50m drive to help graduates clear historical debt

JOHANNESBURG - Thousands of graduates have remained locked out of jobs and further study,
because historical student debt has prevented them from collecting their degree certificates.

But now the University of Pretoria could give some of them a second chance.

The institution has launched a three-year campaign to raise R50-million to help qualifying graduates clear outstanding debt.

The university has revealed that its student debt has exceeded R1-billion, while unpaid fees across South Africa's universities have reached R24-billion.

The campaign has already secured early donor support as it aims to help more graduates enter the job market.
