CAPE TOWN - At least 21 people have died following a crash on the N1 between Prince Albert and Leeu-Gamka in the Western Cape.
The collision happened at around 11.30pm on Sunday and involved two minibus taxis and a station wagon.
The severity of the crash has forced authorities to close the N1 in both directions, with motorists urged to avoid the area and use alternative routes.
Police say the only available alternative is via Prince Albert Road Station, along the R407 towards the N12, before continuing on the N12 towards Beaufort West.
Authorities are warning motorists to expect significant delays and to exercise extreme caution while travelling in the area.
Emergency personnel and traffic officials remain at the scene, and motorists have been urged to follow their instructions and avoid the affected section of the N1 where possible.
The cause of the crash has not yet been confirmed.
