LIVE | Julius Malema sentenced

KUGOMPO CITY - Julius Malema’s fate now lies squarely in the hands of Magistrate Twanet Olivier.

She’s expected to begin sentencing proceedings on Thursday, after the defence and the State presented their final heads of argument during pre-sentencing proceedings in the firearms discharge trial.

In October last year, Malema was found guilty on five charges relating to the Firearms Control Act.

He’d fired shots in front of a build-up area, during the Economic Freedom Fighters' fifth birthday celebrations in July 2018.

State prosecutor Joel Cesar said the court must consider the degree of premeditation and the lack of remorse by Malema.

But the EFF leader’s legal team is denying these claims. Instead, they believe that the state has misinterpreted some of the evidence given in court by their client.
