Malawians living in fear after death during march

PIETERMARITZBURG - While Malawian nationals are being repatriated in Durban, another camp has sprung up in Pietermaritzburg.

A group is camped out there after the recent murder of a Malawian national in the JikaJoe informal settlement.

The death followed a march between Dales Park and Pietermaritzburg City Hall.

It’s understood that after the march, a group broke away and headed to JikaJoe Informal Settlement.

They were responding to news that someone had been killed by a foreigner.

The group then attacked residents, leaving a 29-year-old dead and two others in

Police say they are investigating the incident.

Another group of Malawian nationals is now sheltered at Durban Drive-In, awaiting repatriation as efforts to send them home continue.
