Malawians stranded in Durban continue wait

DURBAN - Thousands of Malawians are still at Sherwood Hall in Durban as they await repatriation.

Frustration has been simmering over delays in getting transport. They boiled over on Wednesday, and police had to set off stun grenades to control the riotous crowd.

The migrants are being processed through the Virtual Priority Court, set up to deal with immigration matters. Over 7,000 Malawian nationals are stranded, seeking repatriation.

Meanwhile, President Cyril Ramaphosa met with religious leaders at the Union Buildings on Wednesday to discuss migration.

This follows growing anti-illegal migration protests across the country. The faith leaders welcomed the government’s five-step migration plan.

They also called for stronger law enforcement and urgent attention to the situation in Durban. The meeting also highlighted the importance of the upcoming National Dialogue.
