Malawians stranded in Johannesburg waiting for transport home

JOHANNESBURG - A humanitarian crisis unfolds outside Malawi’s consulate in Johannesburg, where scores of families remain stranded waiting to return home.

Aid groups say many are sleeping in freezing conditions, with scant access to food, clean water, or sanitation.

They accuse Malawian authorities of failing to provide adequate support.

South African officials say they have processed more than 53,000 foreign nationals since mid-June, with Malawians making up over 80 percent.

Yet many returnees arrive home with little more than the clothes on their backs, raising fresh concerns for those caught in the crisis.
