Edward Khomotso Madiba
MAHIKENG - A manhunt is under way for convict Edward Khomotso Madiba.
He escaped from the Rooigrond Maximum Security Correctional Centre near Mahikeng on 6 September.
Madiba is serving a 20-year sentence for robbery, possession of a firearm and ammunition, kidnapping and parole violations.
According to Department of Correctional Services (DCS) spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo, Madiba, was being detained in the single cells on a further charge relating to a previous escape when he managed to break out of the correctional centre.
"Preliminary information indicates that offender Madiba cut through the burglar-bar door of the single cells," he said.
Eight officials have been served with notices to suspend pending the outcome of investigations into the escape.
