Masemola accused of protecting corrupt officers, interfering in investigations

JOHANNESBURG - National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola has been accused of protecting corrupt officers and interfering in key investigations.

These allegations have been made by suspended Mpumalanga police commissioner Daphney Manamela.

She said her suspension came as she acted against extortion and corruption, and claims a provincial task team probing serious crimes was disbanded soon after.

Manamela also alleged that Masemola and a senior officer accepted a multi-million rand bribe linked to a high-profile murder and corruption case.

Both have strongly denied the claim.

In response, police have acknowledged that the allegations are serious and cannot be ignored, promising to investigate.

Meanwhile, Masemola is due to appear in the Pretoria magistrate's court on Tuesday in connection with the R360-million Medicare24 tender.
