Masemola in court over controversial R360m SAPS tender

PRETORIA - Police National Commissioner Fannie Masemola is expected to appear in court on Tuesday.

Masemola is facing an uphill battle as calls mount for President Cyril Ramaphosa to suspend him.

He will face charges related to violating the Public Finance Management Act.

At the centre of it all is a controversial R360-million tender awarded to Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala.

The Investigating Directorate Against Corruption has charged Masemola for failing in his duties as the SAPS accounting officer. He was tasked to protect and account for its purse.

The tender was advertised on 31 January 2024, and 22 bids were received.

The Bid Evaluation Committee prepared a report recommending the appointment of Medicare24 Tshwane District on 29 April 2024.

VMalala benefited from this deal, with money transferred on 14 June 2024.

SAPS Service's Section Head of Quality Management, Rachel Matjeng, who oversaw the process, then received a weight loss drug.

It costs between R4,500 and R5,000 per unit. She also received about R300,000 from Matlala.

Masemola only cancelled the contract in May 2025 following a final audit report.

Twelve police officers who have been charged in connection with the contract appeared in court on 25 March.
