Matric class of 2025 achieves 88% pass rate

JOHANNESBURG - Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube announced the 2025 National Senior Certificate results on Monday evening.

The NSC pass rate is 88% - an increase of around 0.7% from 2024.

88% is the highest pass rate in South Africa’s history.

Private school matriculants have achieved an overall pass rate of 98.31%.

KwaZulu-Natal achieved first place with a pass rate of 90.6%. 

The Free State was the next best performing province with a pass rate of 89.33%.

The Eastern Cape was in ninth place with 84.17%.

Limpopo placed eighth with a pass rate of 86.15%. Seventh was Mpumalanga with 86.55%.

The Northern Cape had the biggest improvement of all the provinces and placed sixth with a pass rate of 87.79%.

The Western Cape was in fifth position with 88.2%.

The North West came next with a pass rate of 88.4%

Gauteng placed third with 89.06%.
