Matric results publication battle heads to Supreme Court

JOHANNESBURG - The Information Regulator is petitioning the Supreme Court of Appeal over the publication of matric results.

The regulator wants newspapers to stop publishing exam results because it exposes pupils' personal information.

The High Court in Pretoria disagreed, paving the way for results to be released as usual.

"I think the court's ruling was very balanced, and particularly the issue of access," said Naptosa's Basil Manuel.

"We believe that it's an important act, but we can't see why the information regulator is so hell-bent on this issue, when we can show that, in fact, we are not exposing personal information of anybody, because the person is still unknown to the broader public, unless they've shared their detail with certain people.

"And that is why we are saying, with the movement of time, we've got to move with the processes that are there. And of course, in the next few years, we may have a different process."
