Mbeki, Zuma oppose TRC cases inquiry extension

JOHANNESBURG – Former presidents Jacob Zuma and Thabo Mbeki have opposed an application to extend the TRC Cases Inquiry.

The former heads of state have asked President Cyril Ramaphosa not to grant the Inquiry an extension.

Mbeki and Zuma previously approached the court to have Justice Sisi Khampepe removed as the Inquiry’s chairperson. The joint court bid was unsuccessful.

They had accused Khampepe of failure to disclose her recommendations on TRC cases referred to the NPA during her time as a Deputy Director.

The Inquiry is looking into claims of political interference to block prosecutions of apartheid-era crimes.

Last December, Ramaphosa granted the Inquiry an extension until 31 July 2026 for the submission of its final report.
