Mbeki, Zuma to testify before TRC cases inquiry

JOHANNESBURG - Former presidents Thabo Mbeki and Jacob Zuma are set to testify before the TRC cases inquiry after all.

Mbeki will appear before Justice Sisi Khampepe on 19 and 20 October, while his successor Zuma will testify on 22 October.

The two ex-presidents tried unsuccessfully to get Justice Khampepe to recuse herself as chairperson of the judicial inquiry into possible political interference in post-TRC apartheid prosecutions.

Their legal battle to force Khampepe out hit the final brick wall before the Constitutional Court at the end of August.

Families and survivors of apartheid-era gross human rights violations - known as the Calata Group - want to know why apartheid-era crimes identified by the TRC have not been properly investigated and prosecuted.
