Medicare24 confirms it worked for EMPD

JOHANNESBURG - Medicare24 was allowed to do work for the EMPD without any agreements in place.

That's according to CEO Mike van Wyk, who was implicated at the Madlanga Commission.

He says suspended Deputy EMPD Chief Julius Mkhwanazi facilitated the process.

Van Wyk also says he met then Ekurhuleni Safety MMC Sizakele Masuku and EMPD Chief Isaac Mapiyeye.

Van Wyk also said his company was separate from Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala's Medicare24 Tshwane District.

He said he met Matlala at a car wash and they shared a love for fancy cars.

"We became friends and that was our dealings for a long time until he came to me and said, he wants to go into healthcare."

The businessman said Matlala wanted to buy a franchise in Medicare24.

"I was asked to do the tender on his behalf. We made it extremely clear in the tender committee that we are the operating company. He has all the documents. This is the difference between the companies and that we are operating company because he had no clue of running operations."
