JOHANNESBURG - Security has been stepped up as authorities prepare for planned demonstrations ahead of the June 30 deadline set by anti-migrant groups.
Police and private security companies are monitoring key areas
Buses are carrying migrants choosing voluntary repatriation back to their home countries.
Officials say law enforcement will protect public safety and act against intimidation and criminal activity during the planned protests.
For many families the uncertainty and growing fear of violence has forced difficult decisions about whether to stay or leave.
A displaced documented immigrant said he was going home because he did not feel safe.
"I'm going back because of the current situation that is here in South Africa. I'm not happy to be going back, but if these things were spoken about in a humanitarian manner, I would have stayed but the community is forcing us to leave. That is why I am going, not because I want to."
