Military vets fight to stay in crumbling homes

RANDFONTEIN - Military veterans and their families say they fought for their homes.

Now they are fighting to keep them.

Allegations of unlawful removals and crumbling infrastructure have once again thrust the Montrose Housing Development in Randfontein into the spotlight.

They claim some families were forced out last week and fear more could follow.

At the same time, military veterans say the development had not been completed when they moved in during September 2023.

Bulk services were outstanding.

They say they had no choice but to move in because they needed shelter.

Nearly three years later, they claim electricity has still not been installed, sewerage systems remain incomplete, and infrastructure is deteriorating.

Some are now calling to be relocated.

eNCA contacted the former liaison officer accused of interfering in allocations. She declined to comment.

The Gauteng Human Settlements Department says it was not aware of these specific allegations and has escalated the matter for verification.
