Millions still depend on grants despite economic progress

JOHANNESBURG - Despite signs of progress in living conditions, millions of South Africans continue to battle poverty and unemployment.

The 2025 General Household Survey report released by Statistics South Africa, highlights several improvements critical sectors.

More than 90 percent of households now have access to electricity, while formal housing and water plumbing have also improved.

However, over 50 percent of households still benefit from social grants and nearly a quarter rely on them for survival.
