A miracle: Toddler stabbed 15 times fights to recover

GQEBERHA - "It's going to be tough explaining these scars to her one day."

That's the concern of Alicia Nkuthu, mother of a 2-year-old girl from Jeffrey's Bay, Eastern Cape.

The toddler is recovering after being stabbed 15 times, allegedly by her babysitter.

Doctors are describing her daughter's survival as a miracle.

"I'm overjoyed my baby's going home healthy and normal. It's a huge miracle," Nkuthu said.

"She's a survivor and a fighter. The chest wound was so severe, it should've been fatal, but God's miracle saved her."

Paediatrician, Dr Wayne Stewart, says the toddler is a miracle baby.

"She was admitted when I was on duty, seeing all these multiple stabs and not doing quite well," he said.

"But likely with all the hard work that has been put in by our entire team, we got to a stage where we are getting ready to discharge her back to her mom."

Stewart says the 2-year-old was critical on arrival.

The 59-year-old babysitter faces charges of child neglect and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

She'll be back in Humansdorp magistrates' court for a bail application on 12 January.
