MK Party calls for Public Protector's head

JOHANNESBURG - The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) has formally written to National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza.

The party is calling for the initiation of Section 194 proceedings to remove Public Protector Kholeka Gcaleka from office.

The party claims she failed to properly investigate key aspects of the Phala Phala scandal.

Citing later Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) findings, MK alleges the Public Protector failed to identify or refer possible criminal conduct, abuse of state resources, or irregular actions involving senior police officials.

The party argues these alleged omissions raise concerns about incompetence and possible bias, stressing that Chapter 9 institutions must act independently and without favour.

"The Public Protector’s role is to protect the public, and not the politics of a sitting President or politicians," MKP said.

The request now pressures Parliament to consider whether to initiate proceedings to assess Gcaleka’s fitness to hold office.
