JOHANNESBURG - Nineteen people died in three separate accidents around the country on Saturday.
Fourteen people have been killed in two separate crashes in Limpopo's Sekhukhune District.
Limpopo Transport and Community Safety MEC Violet Mathye confirmed the first crash claimed nine lives, while the second left five people dead.
“The first accident that we're talking about was between a truck and a Polo, which also involved a kombi,” she said.
The second accident claimed nine lives.
“It was between a Polo and a Toyota Tazz where we lost many people because from the Polo we lost four and from the Toyota Tazz,” Mathye confirmed.
In KwaZulu-Natal, another accident occurred along the R612 towards Ixopo, South of KZN.
Based on a preliminary report from the Road Traffic Inspectorate team, another accident claimed the lives of five people, 3 females and 2 males. They were ejected from the vehicle.
The sixth occupant was seriously injured when the VW Polo crashed into the roadside barrier.
KZN MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma said the matter was handed over to the South African Police Service Accident Unit for investigation.
“We wish to send our deepest condolences to the families of the victims. I have assigned my office and a team from the road safety directorate to locate the families of the victims.”
