Morero: Joburg is not in a crisis

JOHANNESBURG - Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero is pushing back against claims the City is in financial crisis.

Despite National Treasury withholding funding, Morero insists the metro remains financially stable and says a recovery plan is already underway.

"We have received correspondence from National Treasury that confirmed that our city's 2026-2027 budget, or annual budget, is fully funded," Morero said.

"This is comforting feedback as it confirms that our financial management is okay and has not reached a crisis point. However, more needs to be done to manage our cash flow and revenue performance.

"Accountability and transparency sit at the centre of this recovery."

Meanwhile, Rand Water is set to conduct phase two of its infrastructure maintenance from next Friday.

Morero warns that some areas may not have water.

"On the 17th of July, our bulk supplier, Rand Water, will carry out the second and final phase of its planned maintenance from 7 in the morning to 7pm, a 12-hour period," Morero said.

"This phase is undertaken between the 29th. The first phase was undertaken between 29 May and 2 June and was completed successfully. And this final phase is essential; it's an essential preventative work on the bulk infrastructure that supplies Johannesburg and surrounding municipalities."
