JOHANNESBURG - Nearly three million travellers moved through South Africa's borders in May. Foreign visitors made up over 76 percent of that number.
Stats SA says foreign arrivals and departures are higher than a year ago which points to a resilient tourism sector.
The total number of travellers rose 1.5 percent to 2.8 million in May 2026 compared to last year.

But it declined 10.3 percent month-on-month from April, pointing to softer travel activity on a monthly basis.
Road travel continues to dominate, making up more than two-thirds of all movement. Over 97 percent of international visitors come to South Africa on holiday.
Business, study and medical travel account for the remaining figure. Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Lesotho remain the biggest source of visitors, while the US and UK anchor overseas arrivals.
