JOHANNESBURG - The number of local water systems in a critical state has risen to 396, up from 334 in 2022.
According to the 2025 Green Drop Report, released by Water and Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina, only 66 water systems are performing at excellent or good standards.
It was 118 previously. The Green Drop Report also highlights deteriorating municipal wastewater performance, citing issues such as poor maintenance, budgeting failures, and incompetent staff.
Municipalities and other stakeholders are urged to confront these problems honestly, and work to improve the country’s water situation.
