New witnesses to take stand as Madlanga Commission resumes

PRETORIA - Two new witnesses are expected to take the stand as the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry resumes on Monday.

The focus is going to be on the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT).

The Commission has heard 37 witnesses during testimonies over 45 days. Nine witnesses testified during phase two.

The Commission has also received evidence from 28 walk-in submissions.

In December, the Commission submitted an interim report to President Cyril Ramaphosa, which the Presidency said would not be made public.

A number of high-profile witnesses, including corruption-accused SAPS general Shadrack Sibiya and KZN Hawks Boss Leseja Senona are expected to take the stand in the coming week.

The Commission’s spokesperson Jeremy Michaels confirmed that Senona was scheduled to appear on Tuesday. He said dozens more witnesses were scheduled to appear.

Michaels said the commission will likely ask for an extension of the 17 March deadline.

“We had indicated in July that given the broad terms of reference, the scope of our mandate, we anticipate there is going to be a necessity for an adjustment in the timeline, but that is a matter for Justice Madlanga and the President to discuss," he said.
