CAPE TOWN - Western Cape police say the deadly stabbing of 19-year-old Nhlamulo Sambo in Mossel Bay was not related to anti-migrant protests or xenophobic unrest.
A preliminary investigation indicates that Sambo's death was a burglary gone wrong.
"We have arrested a suspect but it is not related to the incidents of Friday that have anti-foreign sentiments," said Thembisile Patekile Western Cape Police Commissioner.
Patekile said Sambo and a 15-year-old boy were allegedly caught inside a shack during what is believed to be a theft. They were confronted by the property owner and a fight led to the stabbing. Investigations are ongoing.
Police have cautioned the public against spreading unverified narratives.
On Tuesday, Western Cape police confirmed two Mozambican nationals were killed in Mossel Bay and Kleinmond after a wave of deadly violence. The killings are being described as possible xenophobic attacks. Images circulating online show people fleeing for safety.
