No disruptions expected at SONA, says Speaker Didiza

CAPE TOWN - National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza says Parliament is not anticipating any disruptions when President Cyril Ramaphosa delivers his State of the Nation Address on Thursday.

In 2025, Didiza’s amendments to the Rules of the House were upheld by the High Court, granting her greater authority to maintain order in the National Assembly — particularly during high-profile events like SONA.

The Rules Committee introduced stricter measures for joint sittings, prohibiting Members of Parliament (MPs) from raising points of order or asking questions during major addresses.

Didiza says the changes have significantly improved conduct in the House.

“It’s an important amendment that was upheld by the court. It allows us to improve our rules as Parliament on how to conduct our business. Parties themselves, because they are the crafters of those rules, understand the importance and why it’s necessary to have some of these amendments.”

On MPs’ expected behaviour on Thursday evening, Didiza joked: “We always have well-behaved adults. Members of Parliament also appreciate the importance of representing the constituencies that elected them.”

Meanwhile, extensive security and transport measures have been rolled out to ensure a smooth and safe event.

Officials say special arrangements -- including designated areas and lanes -- have been put in place to efficiently manage arrivals and departures.

Deputy National Commissioner Tebello Mosikili said police have improved this year’s departure and transport plan.
