No short-term fixes - Cachalia tables R127bn Budget Vote

CAPE TOWN - Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia has tabled a multibillion-rand Budget Vote for the Ministry of Police.

On Tuesday, Cachalia announced that a total of over R127-billion has been allocated for the 2026/27 financial year.

According to Cachalia, the budget aligns with the department's reset agenda.

This agenda, which he refers to, speaks on the efforts to strengthen the fight against organised and violent crimes while also rebuilding a trusted police service.

“It is important to understand that the police reset agenda is not a oneyear project finalised in an annual budget cycle. It requires a multiyear turnaround strategy that is consistently implemented, Cachalia explained.

Strengthening crime intelligence also remains a key priority.

This is because it is through such intelligence that officials can fight orgainsed crime.

“It must identify threats early, infiltrate organised criminal networks, prevent violent crime and guide operational deployments through credible information and analysis,” Cachalia said.

The minister maintains that work is being done

“We won’t promise miracles or short-term fixes. What matters is that the direction we are taking is clear and the goals are firm,”Cachalia said.
