NPA bid to question Nkabinde Enquiry witnesses denied

JOHANNESBURG - The Nkabinde Enquiry has rejected a bid by the National Prosecuting Authority to lead its own questioning.

The NPA wanted to lead evidence and cross-examine witnesses directly, bypassing the inquiry's evidence leaders.

The NPA argues the current system limits its ability to represent its institutional interests.

But Advocate Tembeka Ngcukaitobi warned the move could create confusion and lead to allegations of bias by witnesses.

Ngcukaitobi also said the NPA had not proven the current system is dysfunctional.

The enquiry is probing the collapse of the Cato Manor racketeering case and examining the conduct of suspended South Gauteng Director of Public Prosecutions, Andrew Chauke.
