NPA urges confidence in IDAC despite Johnson controversy

JOHANNESBURG - Advocate Andrea Johnson remains IDAC's head for now, but the future credibility of South Africa's anti-corruption unit is under the spotlight.

Johnson has been subpoenaed to testify at the Madlanga Commission after being hospitalised and failing to appear.

She's accused of misconduct.

The National Prosecuting Authority’s Kaizer Kganyago said the actions of a few shouldn't define an institution which is still pursuing some of the country's biggest corruption cases.

“What is important is that the minister and the NDPP realise that if we do not intervene at this present moment, we will then have a problem of credibility.

“Ultimately, we'll start having calls from people who say they would not want to be investigated by IDAC because they don't believe in the credibility of the people who work there.

“And I can safely tell you, IDAC has got a lot of people who are doing their work and they're doing it diligently. Therefore, we do not want a situation where one or two or three issues end up punishing the good work that IDAC has done."
