JOHANNESBURG - A 58-year-old man has briefly appeared in the Johannesburg magistrate's court, facing charges of rape and attempted murder for a crime that has horrified the nation.
This as a one-year-old baby girl fights for her life in hospital after being raped, allegedly by her own grandfather.
When the mother returned to collect her child after end-of-year celebrations, she found her one-year-old baby bleeding, brutally violated, and her trust in humanity irreversibly shattered.
It has also emerged that the accused is HIV-positive.
The child's shattered mother and an enraged Claremont community are demanding swift justice for a crime that has left deep, unhealed scars.
The community warns that if the system fails, they are prepared to take matters into their own hands.
The suspect is expected to return to the Johannesburg Central magistrate’s court for a bail hearing on 12 January.
The shell-shocked mother and shaken community wait anxiously, uncertain of what justice, or its absence, may bring.
