STILFONTEIN - Thursday marks a year since the end of the Stilfontein mine rescue operation.
It ended with 78 bodies retrieved from underground and 246 illegal miners rescued alive.
Police had descended on the mine, cutting off the supply of food and water.
Exits to the abandoned mineshaft were sealed off.
The illegal miners died of starvation, while survivors suffered severe physical distress.
