JOHANNESBURG - Emmarentia residents are in an uproar.
Social media is ablaze with outrage over alleged plans to sell off parts of the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens for private housing and commercial developments.
But the City of Johannesburg has denied the claims.
Ward councillor Nicolene Jonker said the proposed plans are very worrying.
"It's a blanket approach and this is what we're fighting. We're asking Johannesburg Property Company what their intentions are," she said.
She said the community is ready to challenge JPC in court.
"We are ready to litigate should it get to that."
JPC General Manager Sizeka Tshabalala said all the portions are contained in one title deed.
"In terms of the report that I prepared and submitted to the council, I was clear that I would want to comply with the legislation that says I must undertake a public participation process," she said.
