Over 4,000 councillors and mayors meet in Soweto for ANC roll call

JOHANNESBURG - More than 4,800 councillors from across the country are gathering at FNB Stadium in Nasrec, for a Roll Call, led by party president Cyril Ramaphosa.

The engagement comes after the National Executive Committee (NEC) unveiled its service delivery and infrastructure action plan, adopted by the committee.

This meeting comes after  a special two-day NEC meeting at the weekend, to assess the state of local government.

ANC councillors are now asked to account for their work since the 2021 local government elections.

Speaking ahead of today’s roll call, NEC member Dr Dickson Masemola says the two-day meeting was a clear commitment,

that the government cannot continue to amend problems and difficulties of municipalities, but to provide solutions.

His statement comes on the back of Presidents commitment for bolder and more targeted plans to fix municipalities.

Ramaphosa attributes the lack of accountability among corrupt and ineffective officials as the primary reason behind the failures.
