PRETORIA - The Border Management Authority has processed 72,906 repatriations across all ports of entry.
This is according to Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi.
She announced the figures at an Interministerial Committee (IMC) on Migration media briefing in Pretoria.
“The Border Management Authority has processed at all its ports of entry 72,906 repatriations for the period between 7 June and 14 July,” Kubayi said.
She said government had also nabbed more than 300 foreign nationals for pending crimes.
“Law enforcement authorities have registered 354 cases of arrests and prosecutions are still pending. An additional 69 people were arrested in Jeffries Bay last weekend and appeared in court on Monday,” she said.
Kubayi urged everyone to respect the work of the authorities and abide by the law.
“We would like to issue a strong warning against those who undermine the work of our law enforcement officers or otherwise face the consequences.
“Government and social partners have been coordinating assistance to vulnerable foreign nationals affected by recent tensions and displacement.
“Government is firmly committed to implementing a migration system That is secure. Humane, lawful, and aligned with the values of our constitution.”
Two Ghanaian nationals had submitted a petition to the International Criminal Court asking it to examine years of xenophobic violence in South Africa. This petition has failed.
“We have been advised legally that this filing fails to satisfy the statutory legal triggers and jurisdictional requirements necessary for action by the court,” she added.
