'Over 80 vehicles recovered since April' - BMA

JOHANNESBURG - The BMA's Vehicle Targeting System is already bearing fruit.

It's helped recover 83 vehicles valued at over R46 million rand since its implementation in April.

The system has also flagged thousands of cases involving vehicles with outstanding documentation.

BMA Commissioner Mike Masiapato said the initiative is helping authorities identify stolen vehicles, falsified ownership records and other fraud.

" Just to demonstrate that we are not launching something that is starting today, but we are launching something that is unfolding as we speak. This system has been running since 1 April.

"We say that we have been able to have around 83 vehicles that have recovered up to this point. In the past six months, 83 vehicles has been recovered. And in terms of our mathematics, they are all valued at around R46.6million. Seven of those were stolen vehicles that we had to recover. Eight were ownership records that has been falsified. Eight were cloned vehicles. Twenty-seven stopped on the basis of the false letters or fraudulent letters from the financers that were produced, and 33 financed vehicles were also recovered, settled, and they were returned to the institutions that own them.

"Separately, we can also indicate that around one thousand eight hundred and seventeen vehicles had been stopped because the person driving could not show the written consent of the bank or the financier through which the vehicle is then financed on. And we therefore also put the value of that to around 600 and 36 million."
