Parliament assures traders SONA won't halt business operations

JOHANNESBURG - While the wheels for the State of the Nation Address are set in motion, businesses around Cape Town's City Hall will continue as usual.

This is despite heightened security, a ceremonial buildup including a red carpet, and anticipated traffic disruptions ahead of the event.

National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza said they have engaged the informal traders who usually use the space opposite City Hall.

Through ongoing discussions with the Traders' Association and relevant authorities, arrangements have been put in place to balance parliamentary operations with continuity of trading activities, she said.

This, according to Didiza, will ensure minimal disruptions while maintaining the security and functionality of the parliamentary precinct.

SONA is an annual overview which will be delivered by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Approximately 490 MPs, including representatives of local government, will be accommodated in the chamber, where they will listen in to the much-awaited address.

Following the address, Parliament will host a two-day joint debate by members of both Houses on 17 and 18 February.

The President’s reply to the debate, on 19 February, will then conclude this phase of the SONA programme.
