Parliament's impeachment committee to call Ramaphosa

CAPE TOWN - Parliament's Impeachment Committee has agreed that President Cyril Ramaphosa will be requested to appear before it.

The inquiry follows a recommendation by Parliament’s Section 89 committee to investigate whether there are grounds for Ramaphosa's impeachment.

The committee also said Ramaphosa would not be the first witness to testify.

It will begin by hearing from other witnesses before calling the President.

"The Impeachment Committee met today to consider, among other things, the legal opinion on the appearance of the President, its recommendation for the appointment of the evidence leader and the draft terms of reference that will guide its work," the committee said in a statement.

"In considering the legal opinion, the committee agreed that the President will not be the first witness to appear before the committee. It must first establish a case to which the President can respond."
