JOHANNESBURG - The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has its sights set on young people ahead of the local government elections.
Almost half a million first-time voters came out to register to have their say at the polls. Political parties are pushing to get more people to participate in the critical elections.
Dirk Kotze says political parties must be able to mobilise supporters using different mechanisms.

"That depends on their internal organisation on the ground, from the people who are driving the combis to take people to the voting stations, the people who are phoning the voters to remind them to be at certain positions and those who assist them in the process."
Kotze said the special vote will also be an important medium to mobilise support.
"Especially when it comes to older people or those involved in other ways including the police, the staff of the IEC. These are all mechanisms that can play a role in the voting."
