Phahlane alleges trumped-up charges against him following Nkabinde testimony

JOHANNESBURG - Former acting National Police Commissioner Khomotso Phahlane says Cedrick Nkabinde's allegations are not new to him.

Nkabinde, the police minister's chief of staff, told the Ad Hoc Committee there was a plot to prevent Phahlane being appointed permanently as National Police Commissioner.

Phahlane was suspended in 2017 for misconduct.

He was fired in 2020 for his role in the procurement of cameras for the Forensic Services division.

He says he is being implicated in something that happened years after he was suspended from the police.

"I say it is baseless in the sense that the payments happened in 2019," says Phahlane.

He alleges the person who approved the payment was Khehla Sithole, who was National Police Commissioner at the time.

"I have been sitting at home since 1 June 2017," he adds.

Phahlane claims he wasn't given the opportunity to explain himself.

Nkabinde has alleged that private investigator Paul O'Sullivan and AfriForum were in on the plot against Phahlane.

Both have denied any role.
