Plenty of rotten apples within SAPS, witness tells Parliament

CAPE TOWN – Former Crime Intelligence Finance Head Tiyani Hlungwani has alleged widespread corruption within the police service.

Hlungwani testified before Parliament’s Ah Hoc Committee on Thursday, claiming senior SAPS officials are corrupt.

In an exchange with the Committee’s chairperson, Molapi Lekganyane, Hlungwani said there are plenty of rotten apples within SAPS.

He also alleged misconduct of judges, which he said can be further probed when he makes his submissions to the Judicial Service Commission.

He also claimed there were factions and divisions within the SAPS.

“They are very much divided, and a house divided cannot stand. The divisions are caused by the battle for control of Crime Intelligence and the Secret Services account. The biggest risk is the management of both the police and Crime Intelligence,” he told Parliament.

Hlungwani, who controlled the secret services account, also accused senior officials of corruption and misuse of public funds.
