Police seize goods worth R350m in December takedown

JOHANNESBURG - Police have seized R350-million worth of counterfeit and illicit goods from three provinces during a December takedown.

SAPS spokesperson Amanda van Wyk said 33 suspects were arrested in the operations, which targeted KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and the Western Cape.

Some of the suspects were also found to have contravened the Immigration Act.

Among the 600,000 products seized were illicit medications, the majority of which were sexual enhancement drugs and cosmetics.

“We believe suspects who have been arrested will assist in leading us to those behind the network that supplies and distributes these counterfeit goods,” Van Wyk said.

She warned consumers to think twice before buying products sold in illicit markets.
