JOHANNEBSURG - The Independent Policing Union of South Africa (IPUSA) says the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Independent Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) have an opportunity to repair their strained relationship, but stresses that both institutions must respect each other's mandates.
The union has also welcomed the establishment of IDAC's ombud office, saying it will play a crucial role in helping the directorate restore its credibility and strengthen public confidence.
IPUSA General Secretary Mpho Kwinika says South Africa cannot afford to lose institutions such as IDAC, given their critical role in combating corruption.
"We cannot afford to lose institutions such as IDAC. And I'm not talking about individuals. I'm talking about the body that has been established to look or to take care of issues of corruption. You know, corruption sidelines the resources that are aimed at building societies," Kwinika says.
He says corruption diverts resources meant for essential public services, including schools, hospitals and other facilities that communities rely on.
Kwinika says security institutions must act decisively against corruption and has welcomed the appointment of the judge tasked with overseeing complaints against IDAC investigators, as well as concerns raised by the public.
He says the ombud office marks an important step in improving accountability within the directorate.
