Public Works Minister orders probe into Doornkop building collapse

JOHANNESBURG - Public Works Minister Dean Macpherson has sent out his condolences following a deadly building collapse in Doornkop, Soweto.

Three people died after the double-storey structure caved in on Sunday.

Emergency services report that six people were inside the building at the time of the collapse.

Three others sustained injuries and are receiving treatment at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.

The Minister has requested the Council for the Built Environment to investigate the cause of the collapse.

That probe will look at accountability and recommend steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Emergency teams and officials remain on site as investigations continue.
