JOHANNESBURG - President Cyril Ramaphosa will bestow this year’s National Orders at the Union Buildings — the highest honours given by the country.
The awards recognise South Africans and eminent foreign nationals who have made significant contributions to democracy and improving the lives of citizens.
The President will honour recipients with the Orders of Ikhamanga, Baobab, Mapungubwe, and the Companions of OR Tambo.
Professor Tulio de Oliveira will receive the Order of Mapungubwe in Gold, awarded for excellence and exceptional achievements.
He is recognised for his groundbreaking scientific research, including the discovery of the Omicron variant of COVID-19.
A development that placed South Africa at the forefront of global research and strengthened efforts to curb the spread of the virus.
Other recipients include musicians Jonathan Butler and Wouter Kellerman.
