CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape High Court has ruled in favour of President Cyril Ramaphosa to temporarily interdict the work of Parliament's impeachment committee over the Phala Phala farm scandal.
In a short ruling handed down on Friday, Judge Andre Le Grange said pending a determination of Ramaphosa's review, the first and second respondents being Thoko Didiza, the Speaker of the National Assembly, and Makashule Gana, the chairperson of the impeachment committee, are interdicted from proceeding with the public impeachment hearings.
Ramaphosa is contesting the Section 89 panel’s finding of prima facie evidence that he may have violated the Constitution and the law.
The review hearing is scheduled for 2 to 4 September in the Western Cape High Court.
Presidential spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, said Ramaphosa respects the ruling handed down.
"The President reaffirms his respect of judicial independence and separation of powers enshrined in our Constitution. The President will continue to cooperate with and abide by processes of accountability," Magwenya said in a statement.
